I’m an accounting professor (yes, I teach at U.C. Berkeley) and a recovering CPA who became passionate about the idea of helping more healthcare service providers succeed. I realized my clients were way too busy and found little value in reviewing their own financial statements, other than to determine if they had a profit or loss for the month and enough cash in the bank to make payroll. What they needed was a seasoned financial professional to do the heavy lifting by performing a thorough monthly financial analysis for them. They needed someone to advise and focus them on the most important profit drivers, manage unpredictable cash flow, and avoid making the wrong financial decisions. Most importantly, they needed a financial coach to create an action plan with the exact steps necessary to grow their business and to help them monitor and measure the growth.

After working for over twenty years as a senior executive with some of the top tech companies in Silicon Valley, like DocuSign, Cisco, and Salesforce, I decided to take a break and look into starting my own business. At first, I was thinking about investing in a franchise since they have a proven business model and a higher probability of success, but in my heart, I felt like I would be trading one job for another. To get my bearings right, I interviewed several independent entrepreneurs who built their businesses from scratch, purchased one, or assumed a family business, and found like them, I was more of a maverick and liked the idea of driving fast without guardrails.
Interestingly, one of the most profound insights I received was from a 68-year-old entrepreneur who owns a successful interior design business. She mentioned being an entrepreneur can be very lonely, and making key business decisions that can have an impact on your customers and employees every day, can be overwhelming. Having a business confidant to give you some sound advice and sometimes a sanity check gives you that peace of mind that you aren’t missing a blind spot.
Harsh and I were inspired by her genuine need and realized that most entrepreneurial healthcare professionals probably felt this way. We created a program to guide these entrepreneurs in 10X-ing their businesses. We combined our over 40 years of financial and customer success experience to create My Profit Gurus, a business advisory platform that has been tested and proven time and time again.
